Students read, Bat Loves the Night and A Bat is Born.

Our target comprehension skill is “sequence of events” Students learn to ask and answer questions as they read.

Vocabulary: Students review common suffixes (-ible, -able).

Fluency: Reading Rate. As students read aloud, we work on reading at a ‘talking rate’ that is not too fast or too slow. A good goal for third graders is about 100 words per minute.

We supplement this story with nonfiction articles about bats from National Geographic and other nonfiction grade level sources. Students search for ‘bat facts’ using the text and graphic features.

Essential Question: What makes bats interesting and useful?
