This week, third graders continue reading the novel, Ramona Quimby, Age 8We read chapter 2, “At Howie’s House”

Vocabulary: Students are becoming more comfortable with identifying the common prefixes and suffixes found in our vocabulary words. We write out definitions from each, break them into syllables and identify parts of speech. Students sort words into ABC order and search for context clues as they read in order to better understand the words’ meanings.

Our target comprehension skills are: characterization and “making connections”.In chapter 2, students meet Willa Jean, a precocious preschooler. We work together to create a character trait map using words and actions that demonstrate Willa Jean’s character traits. We use text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connections to better understand and think about story events and characters. Students use questioning and visualization strategies to focus on story elements and characters.
