This week, students read chapters 8-9-10 in Charlotte’s Web.

Our target comprehension skills include: making inferences & understanding character. Students are required to cite text evidence as they answer questions about the story.

As we review each chapter, students brainstorm a list of meaningful quotes for various characters and choose one to write down in their list of Charlotte’s Web quotes. Students also define new vocabulary, list synonyms and antonyms for each word, and use the vocabulary words in sentences.

Students are beginning to understand the various themes in the story. Beyond the overall and basic theme of “friendship,” there are other themes including: “appreciating nature,” “accepting others,” and “life’s purpose.” The children are enjoying looking at the characters and events in a way that connects to their own lives and the world beyond the book.
